What kind of bird did I see?
It was in a creek-bed in northern California(Sonoma county). About the size of a pigeon. Its white on the bottom and light brown on top. It had a black ring around its neck and maybe black and white stripes on its wings. It laid eggs right in the open about ten feet from the water, right on the ground in some rocks. The eggs where brown and white speckled. i have a picture of the eggs if it will help.
The bird you are describing is the Killdeer , they nest near water ,usually making a scrape in the ground and lay up to 4 eggs.which will hatch after 21 days the young do not depend on the parents feeding them as they are cape able of hunting for small insects to feed on when they leave the nest in hours.
They still rely on their parents for comfort protection and warmth
